Pay, Education & Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent and valid driver’s license required.   College level coursework in engineering, construction management, or related field desired.  Professional construction-related certifications preferred
 
Construction Inspector II
  • Starting pay $27.04 per hour, actual pay depends on experience
  • Minimum 5 years of increasingly responsible inspection experience on civil engineering related projects required.
Construction Inspector III
  • Starting pay $30.28 per hour, actual pay depends on experience
  • Minimum 7 years of increasingly responsible inspection experience on civil engineering related projects required.
This is a non-exempt position regarding the provisions of the FLSA.
 

Brief Description of Duties:

Under the supervision of the City Engineer, the Construction Inspector is a non-exempt position under FLSA.  The Construction Inspector oversees grading operations; conducts construction inspections of sidewalks, streets, curbs, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water mains, and other public infrastructure to ensure compliance with city ordinances, construction plans and specifications; participates in the review of engineering construction plans; acts as a liaison between contractors, city staff, and citizens; assists with emergency operations, including snow removal operations, as required.  The City Inspector must have the ability to multi-task and perform job functions with evolving priorities as well as establish and maintain effective internal and external working relationships. 
 
  • Coordinates with the City Engineer to review project plans and contract documents ensuring conformance with city specifications, standards, and policies
  • Attends pre-construction conference meetings to discuss proper construction methods and materials testing requirements for each project
  • Reviews shop drawing submittals for construction materials and verifies accuracy of "as-built" plans
  • Inspect and monitor items related to site grading, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, water mains, street construction, and other routine construction activities, ensuring conformance with city specifications, standards, and policies
  • Observe necessary testing for streets, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, and water mains, including subgrade, concrete and asphalt tests
  • Performs curb, sidewalk, and driveway inspections on residential and commercial properties prior to certificate of occupancy
  • Actively manage assigned projects from a field perspective
  • Measure and track completed quantities, review pay estimate submittals, provide input on change order items, and prepare project closeout documents
  • Performs enforcement actions as necessary which may include rejection of non-compliant material and/or construction methods as well as enforcement of the right-of-way ordinance
  • Reviews all change order and payment requests from contractors
  • Reads and understands field notes, engineering sketches, construction drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Performs routine clerical work including the maintenance of appropriate records and preparation of letters, construction notices, and construction documents
